Once again I find myself binge-listening to this song. This one comes from a rock opera adaptation of Dracula, although I've been too lazy to listen to the whole thing. Maybe I should. But anyway, this song is perfect drag king routine material. If I had the performing confidence I'd definitely do something like that, but once again, I'm too lazy for that shit.

It's another full album y'all~~

So I had dipped my toes into Kalmah in late high school, but I only got as far as listening to and liking 2 songs off of Swampsong before never thinking much of them for a while... until about 2 years ago, when I delved a bit deeper into their discography because I was trying to make a gimmicky playlist where each song shared a title or otherwise correlated with a card or boss from Act 1 of Inscryption. And the song I'd chosen to represent The Angler was Kalmah's "Hook the Monster".

Fast forward to present day, and I ended up deleting the playlist because I gave up on trying to fill it out. But I did remember "Hook the Monster" being in it, and so I set out to relisten to it because my scrippy hyperfix was coming back. Then I decided to listen to the entire album it came from, and I can safely say it's on my "to get a physical copy of" list. Great shit.

Standout tracks: "Rust Never Sleeps", "One of Fail", "Swampwar", "Better Not to Tell", "Hook the Monster", "12 Gauge"

Holy shit it's another full album~

So I first heard about this band from Tumblr after two of their songs were on a "worst song" poll tournament series (which no longer exists -- the mod deleted it before it could even reach the semifinals. Which sucks. But ehh). But much to my surprise, one of the songs actually fucking BANGS. Did a bit of digging and checked the band out, and I can safely say the rest of the album bangs just as much as the song that introduced me to them.

Music-wise, this band's got a lot of influences wrapped up in an avant-garde metal package, from the thrashiness of "Leg Scratch"'s main riff to the vaguely-gothic Evanescence-y stylings of "Screamin' in the Gleamin'". There's even some K-pop influences in there, which the band proudly touts on their YouTube description. The lyrics are quite entertaining, with most of them dealing with mundanities such as finding a dress with pockets, being rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery with embarassing wardrobe choices, and having a psychotic break while consuming a few too many vodka-infused gummies.

Overall, I think this band should definitely get more appreciation. This is their only album (not counting an EP they'd released earlier that contains the other song in that "worst song" poll -- which sucks a lot more than the one introducing me to the band as a whole, but I get the feeling that that song was just a joke, so ymmv), so I hope they get to put out more soon!

(edit: turns out I lied about the EP having the shitty joke song. It was just a standalone single.)

Standout tracks: "Imimmortal", "Leg Scratch", "Screamin' in the Gleamin", "LTD"

Another day, another round of going through YT likes and getting reattached to certain songs I'd almost forgotten about. Hard to believe this was what Will Wood used to sound like before he got TikTok-famous. (well, one of his projects, anyway)

if I had actual music production skills that went beyond shoving stuff in a sheet music editor/porting the MIDI/soundfont-slapping it, I would definitely make a remix of this that sounded like every edgy anime-adjacent media property in the 2000's background music (even though it already sounds pretty close to that type of stuff). But for now, I guess that hypothetical remix will just have to stay in my head.

Been going through my back catalogue of YouTube likes lately. Ended up hyperfixing on this particular song (and this particular version of it, to boot). The vocal harmonies are fucking IMPECCABLE (especially when they break off into the countermelody section in the second half of the chorus), and the instrumental solos interspersed throughout do a great job of breaking up the piece and giving their respective musicians a chance to shine. Bonus points for the interpolation of "Ensei" in the middle (which I know is originally from Mai-HiME, as is the main song itself, but I can't help but thinking back to Mario: The Music Box whenever I hear it).

God, I need to watch Mai-HiME. It's been on my watchlist for a hot minute, but I am fucking allergic to getting into new media that isn't hyperfix/special interest related.

This album's really grown on me since I first listened to it when it released. At first, I kinda brushed it off (aside from the singles) because I thought it was a bit too ballad-heavy. But after reading the lyrics and giving it another listen, I decided I liked it. And now here I am, putting it on heavy rotation all weekend. (And also trying and failing to play "Jesus on the Telephone" on guitar lmaooo)

Standout tracks: "Jesus on the Telephone", "By the Willow Tree", "Champagne", "Your Surgeon is Human, Too", "Meet Me in a Dream", "Walking Out Alone"

(special shout out to "Meet Me in a Dream" for being my fave track despite also being the least-played on the album accd. to YouTube stats... y'all have no taste smdh)

I've been on a city pop kick for the past 2 weeks. No clue why. This particular tune by Anri's probably been in the heaviest rotation on my YouTube playlist, but after discovering this fantastic remix, I think it'll displace the original. The jazz influences combined with the bass-boosted beat are just *chef's kiss*.

If any of y'all were on my Tumblr back in the day, I used to do Song Rec Saturdays, where I chose a random song that I was either hyperfixating on or that I had fond memories of. But since it was getting to be a bit of a chore to choose a new song every Saturday, I kinda dropped it. I decided to bring it back here, except A: it's no longer limited to Saturdays, and B: it's when I have a song I'm hardcore hyperfixing on.

So here's the first installment of "Shit I've been blasting on loop" as I'm now calling it: SHANTI by wotaku (ft. KAITO)
