So the other day, I was listening to Crimson Glory (the '80s USPM band). All the while, I was doing a bit of research on the members, and I came across a fansite in honor of their late frontman "Midnight". On this site, there was a section dedicated to people who knew him IRL sharing their favorite memories of him. And one of them caught my attention.

According to the runner of this fansite, Midnight and two other people operated an official forum dedicated to his solo project as well as some other Crimson Glory side acts. But the way to get to this forum was pretty unique. Rather than being taken right to this forum, one would have to play through this photo-gallery-meets-point-and-click game where you'd have to click specific locations on the photos in order to advance. Thinking this kind of setup would be interesting to play through, I took to archive.org to try and play through what was archived. Obviously, the archived site is very incomplete. But I was able to make it through a bare-bones route and reach what remained of the forum without any trouble. (and I don't know if this is a bug in the archiving or some sort of weird rickroll by the forum admins, but if I try to click any of the threads in the forum itself, archive.org auto-redirects me to some bizarro "Sexy Mandarin" vid on YT. Idk. I'm starting to get off topic.)

So anyway, this little experience got me thinking about the modern web and how the tools in place for most websites don't let people build fun little games into their personal websites unless they can Code Good. Then again, I feel like it wouldn't be that difficult for someone to code a photo gallery point-and-click maze into their personal site. Only thing is, though, what if someone hid their DNI in it and chewed people out for not being able to find it before interacting with them on socmed? That'd be fucked up.

Anyway, this kinda shit is why I love the early Internet even though I didn't really use these kinda sites that much as a kid. And why I will forever have a grudge against modern tech giants for stifling this kind of creativity.

...because the devs announced a new (and very definitely final) entry in the series. After over 7 years since the last one. And judging from the demo footage I stayed up till midnight last night watching, it looks like it's gonna be bigger and better in scope than the last ones.

...it's Five Nights at Fuckboy's. Five Nights at Fuckboy's is getting a new entry. The cracky, 2010s-humor-laden, sex-joke-and-swear-word-laden debauchery-fest made in RPG Maker is getting a new entry in the year of our Lord 2025. Although once again judging from the demo, it looks like the devs have updated their sense of humor somewhat? Or at least gone a little lighter on it, considering the bigger scope of the game. Or maybe they've matured over the years. And it's probably the latter, because going thru their Gamejolt page, I found a really well-written piece of meta about the design philosophy behind golden-age RPG Maker games, kusoge, and the indie landscape in general during the early to mid 2010's.

So anyway, I'm adding Q.E.D. to my to-play list once it hits. And in the meantime, I'm gonna have to get cracking on the backlog of Stuff I Already Have Installed. Which is only one game for now... but one with three constantly-updating routes. Hoo boy.

Can't believe it's 20 fuckin 25. Sci fi dystopia ass year. Praying it doesn't actually become one (at least, not in my neck of the woods). But we're gonna put that aside and focus on more positive stuff. So here we go...

[SHIT I WANNA DO MORE OFTEN] )

[SHIT I WANNA START DOING] )

Finally, I know I should've put this in the "Shit I wanna do more often" section, but I wanted to leave this out of a cut so ppl could read it without clicking any links. This is IMPORTANT. (or maybe not in the grand scheme of things, but oh well.) I wanna start posting on DW more often. I mean, I post fairly often on Blorbo.social (which y'all should totes follow me on if you're on the Fediverse), but this is better for more long winded diatribes. Or maybe even shorter diatribes. Idk. But either way I wanna post more updates about my life, back up more fics, maybe do some community posts if I find anything worth sharing. So expect me here more often? I dunno. Only time will tell. Anyway, happy new yonks, and peace out~~~

So last weekend, I was at the second installment of CitrusCon! The organizers went harder than before with the event lineup/artist alley selections/etc., and I did a LOT more shit as a result. This is gonna take a lot of cuts to not clog up y'all's reading pages, but I hope you click thru nonetheless! Anyway, let's get into it.

So a few days ago, I was replaying some RPG Maker shit on my ancient Windows 7 clunker, and noticed that I could only spend so many minutes at a time (not even hours -- MINUTES) playing games made in RPG Maker MV before the game crashes when years ago, I could have spent longer on them. After checking in Task Manager when having the game on at the same time, I found out it's because the game eats up a LOT of physical memeory. So I take to the interwebs, trying to find out how to be more efficient with physical memory without buying a fresh RAM that I don't know how to put in, and one of the solutions was to clean out the inside of your computer. Or something along those lines, I don't think that was the exact solution.

So with a couple of Wikihow and YouTube tutorials to guide me, I eventually figure out how to open up Clunker-chan and take some compressed air to the dusty shit. It was surprisingly less dusty than I anticipated, although I did manage to get a decent amount out. But then when I qent to screw the case back in, I ran into a problem... I misjudged the size of one of the screw holes, and end up screwing something in at a very dubious angle. And if I tried to unscrew it, it'd just spin in place, the edge of hole likely keeping it from coming out.

So after a bit of fretting over what to do, I ended up biting the bullet and calling a computer repair place. I'm gonna take it in after work and let the pros handle the unscrewing process. I'm pretty optimistic about it, because judging from where the bum screw is, the only thing I won't be able to do if things fail is use a docking station on it... Which I don't have and don't see myself needing in the future. But I'm still holding out for them to get the screw undone, just in case something more crucial gets fucked up.

(Also found out that this ordeal might've been all for nothing, because I found out somebody'd ported the RPGMMV game I was gonna play to MacOS, so I could play it on my main laptop with no problems. :P Can't believe I may have gone through all this trouble just to end up playing Five Nights At Fuckboy's Complete Collection on my main Macbook... Ah well. I've made worse decisions in life.)

(Alsoalso fun fact: the game I was testing out on Clunker-chan might be lost media now? Or something similar? It's a relatively short RPGM horror title called "Chelsea", and there's no official download links anywhere I can find. There is a YouTube playthrough and a TVTropes page for it, though, so I didn't hallucinate the game out of nowhere.)

Yeah. Like the title says, I was on the online MGSCON stream pretty much all afternoon/evening yesterday. Fave part had to be the first VA panel with the SoL VA's. Special shoutout to one of the volunteers they had reading as Raiden who managed to come across as incredibly failboy-ish-ly moe. Also the cosplay contest was fuckin amazing. Especially the Huey cosplayer who managed to not only shade the chara they were dressed as, but also the proliferation of AI slop in our modern tech sphere. Didn't really interact with many people online, but I figured since it was only a one-day thing that seemed to be smaller than last year's installment, I wouldn't be getting as much interaction as I would with bigger online cons. Still fun tho! And now the post-con malaise has settled in...

The video I'm about to show y'all is something I've been looking for for a long time. I watched it almost obsessively in early high school, but when I tried to find it one day, I found out it was deleted...

except it wasn't. It must have been privated or something, because when I looked up OP's name on DuckDuckGo, I came across his official site, which led to a video gallery where some of his more "serious"/"artistic" videos were embedded... which led me back to his YT channel, where I found out the vid I was looking for came back! Huzzah!

So here it is. Brings back a lot of nostalgia for me. (However, I will warn you that some of the imagery might be a bit unsettling... But that's no problem. We're all on the freak site for freaks, right?)

(also more serious CW for flashing lights/colors, nudity, loud noises at the end)

This STUPID fucking AI feature in Instagram's search function is fucking UGLY it clogs up the UI it shoves shit in my face I'm NOT interested in I do NOT want to imagine an alien handbag or whatever insipid tripe AI aficionados like GET THIS SHIT OUT OF MY FACE

and even when I go to APK sites to download earlier versions of Instagram it STILL comes back like a fuckign weed (not the 420 kind)... maybe this is my fault for using Instagram as my primary "IRL" socmed site... maybe i need to stop using "IRL socmed" sites

I know the title + icon combo might make it sound like I have severe beef with the orgs, but I don't. The only thing I have beef with is my brain in this case.

Anyways, I'm starting to contemplate not doing Sakura Exchange this year. I'm not feeling as big of a spark towards any of the fandoms I'd nominate at the moment, which would kill any motivation to put out good-enough work for my recipient. Or at least, would eat up a ton of mental resources.

Then again, maybe things will change in a week or so when signups actually start. I don't know. My brain's weird like that. Plus, I still have the hyperfix rolling for my Finish What You Started piece, so maybe once I get what I want from that done over the weekend, it'll free up some space for me to think about potential Sakuraex pieces. We'll see.

(oh, speaking of: keep an eye in your inboxes. I got a WIP on the way. Probs gonna upload it tomorrow night.)

eff_ess_oe: MS Paint art of a bloody-faced stick figure devouring another stick figure, whose guts are spilled and have red blood leaking out. (stickfiggutsmunch)
So idk if I told DW that I broke 4K on my Finish What You Started piece, but I did. Hell, yesterday that number's been bumped up to 5K now that I've started outlining the barebones shit I left. Don't think I'll make it past 6K, but hey. 2021 me envisioned this fic as being longer than my usual, and that still holds true today. Now we're on track to fulfil my April goal of having everything written out in full, and the hyperfix for the source material is still going strong (although maybe losing ground in favour of a different blorbo from the one highlighted in my fic). Hoping to have a WIP ready soon!
eff_ess_oe: Screenshot of Vex Vulper from Phoenix Wright: Contempt of Court with a wide grin. (vexhappy)
Guess who got their monthly writing goal done? It's meeeee~

Yep, you heard right. My goal for March was to finish fully writing the outlined paragraphs in my leftover WIP from 2021. For y'all paying attention, that's before I got this account. Before I got into Metal Gear. Before I got a full-time job, even. And now that there's an excuse for me to finish it (the Finish What You Started event I mentioned in the previous entry), I'm gonna actually get it done.

Now my new goal is to expand the outlines that I'd barely set out, and then write those out in full. Might start tomorrow, might save it till nexgt weekend entirely. We'll see how shit plays out.
eff_ess_oe: Screenshot of Samuel Rodrigues from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance staring at the camera with a hand tucked under his chin, with an intrigued half-smile on his face. (samhmm)
So after an overly long time period of lacking motivation to work on my Finish What You Started piece, I've been able to muster some up not just once this week, but twice. And hopefully over this coming weekend as well. I've actually made some decent progress, and am just shy of finishing up my March goal of fully writing out the outlined paras I'd left 2 years ago. Here's hoping I can get that in the bag next time I sit down to work on it.

Also, Sakura Exchange is coming up and I really wanna do something for it. Still not 100% committed yet (because of time constraints), but I do have several ideas brewing in my head. Might actually have to start planning my Dear Creator Letter in advance. Hmm...
eff_ess_oe: Screenshot of Akira Otoishi from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure wildly shredding on a guitar, with various katakana surrounding him. (akirashred)
So I was doing a bit of re-research for my Contempt of Court Iceberg writeup so I could refamiliarize myself with the context of what I'd put there. But while I was looking up stuff, I found out that there's been a massive update/overhaul/port? ish? type thing? to PyWright, which is the engine that the game was made in. Which is good, because PyWright was looking pretty fucking outdated the last time I'd looked at it.

Screenshot of GodotWright running on MacOS. The case selection menu for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: The Contempt of Court is set to the first case "Turnabout Scapegoat". The case art depicts Phoenix Wright standing against a blue background, with the silhouette of an unknown character and a King of Hearts playing card depicted alongside him. Two options are selectable below the case's title: "New game" and "Resume game".

Behold: GodotWright! Aside from the name being a neat unintentional reference to the character that hooked me on AA in the first place, this program is basically a fork of the original PyWright that runs in the Godot Engine (which some may remember as the engine Sonic Colors: Ultimate and Buckshot Roulette run on, among other games). It promises faster rendering (which I have noticed while testing it out) and fixes to certain issues that PyWright had (which I haven't noticed so far, although that's because I haven't gotten to any notable buggy parts). So far, my experience with it's been good. However, the text does run a bit faster than PyWright did, which can be an issue when watching the intro cutscenes and other sequences that auto-advance text. And it also has the nasty side-effect of the voice blips having what sounds like a malfunctioning printer in the background because of how quickly they overlap. But ehh. Hopefully the dev will fix these issues soon. The most recent update was in Nov. 2023, so I assume it hasn't gone to abandonware status yet.

(also it comes free with Contempt of Court so now you have no choice but to play it so help me God I'm DYING out here there are like 12 people in this "fandom" and 2/3 of them are either antis, JP stans or both I NEED more people to be unhinged about this game with AAAAAA)

Kinda found myself getting in a slump today, so I did a few things to ease myself out of it. I did do some chores, but that's boring, you don't wanna hear about it. So let's get to the fun shit:

- I hauled out my Ancient Windows 7 Clunker Craptop Supreme and started up my semi-annual replay of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: The Contempt of Court. (I say "semi annual" because I skipped 2023, even though it did spark some activity in the area of my brain that controls my hyperfixes that year.) If you're an AA fan that hasn't heard of this game, I STRONGLY fuckin recommend you play it. Sure, the gameplay of the first case might be buggy, but it is A+ in all other respects. I have an "iceberg" post in the works that I'm probably gonna put out once I finish playing through it this time around, and I also have a fanfic WIP for it that I'm hauling out of the grave for Finish What You Started this April (after I get through with my current WIP. hopefully). Might also put out a ship manifesto for one of my big ships in it. IDK, depends how I feel. But if you've got a Windows machine (preferably one that's slightly out of date, as I'm not sure how well it'll work on Windows 11), PLAY IT. Please. I'm fuckin dying over here...

- I also finished the 2007 Devil May Cry anime. Yeah, I'm into DMC now. It had the makings of a potential hyperfix (a: it being a Fandom-In-Law bc of folks I follow on Dreamwidth and Aethy, b: me having dipped my toes into it a few years back -- about 2018-2019, I wanna say? but not making anything of it until now, and c: it having a banger soundtrack), and in the latter half of January it crept back into my brain and now I can say I'm enough of a fan? Kinda? But I digress. Anyway, the anime was pretty decent. Episodes 7-8 were a slog to get through, but other than that, it was pretty enjoyable, albeit kinda formulaic. And it deviates quite a bit from the source material, but I didn't really mind. Maybe once I get Proper Gaming Device I can immerse myself more into the series proper.

- Speaking of Proper Gaming Devices, I found out that I can pay for a SteamDeck with accumulated Steam Card money, so I'm either gonna start loading up on those, or... I can get something different. I just learned about the Retroid Pocket, which is an Android-based multi-emulator handheld that fits into my budget way better than a SteamDeck, and aligns more closely with my current gaming tastes. It all comes down to where my tastes end up in a few months' time. For now, I'm still leaning towards the SteamDeck, but I'm keeping the Retroid as a second choice.

- I went on a silly little walk for my silly little mental health. No pictures this time, since a) I didn't take any, and b) it doesn't look pretty outside, unless you find some semblance of beauty in half-melted snow and barren suburban sidewalks. But the fresh air was nice, and I needed to get some cardio in. Hopefully if the weather cooperates within the next few weeks I'll be able to get more in.

- I also cooked up an AMAZING grilled cheese sandwich for last night's dinner using this recipe on Tumblr. I'd actually made it before, but this time I managed to avoid burning the garlic, which ruled.

- Finally, I have the draft? script? etc. for my tattoo appointment request. I'm glad the artist I chose takes Insta DMs and provided a template for them, which saves me a fuckton of social spoons. Now all I have to do is send it sometime within the next week. Or two, But I do have the timeframe for the actual appointment ideally set for March, which narrows down when I can send the message without looking like an idiot. Hopefully I can get over my Discomfort With Putting Myself Out There in due time.

That's all for me. See you when I have something else to say.

eff_ess_oe: Screenshot of Venom Snake from MGS5 taking a hit from the Phantom Cigar, with pixelated sunglasses edited over top of his face. (venomsmoke)
Well, it's 2024. First week's gone pretty standard (if hectic, since work was kicking my ass for the first three days). Figured I could use this as an excuse to lay out my intentions for the year, as well as keep track of how much I've stuck to last year's goals.

NEW (ish) SHIT I'M GONNA DO (hopefully)

- Find a way to play actual games on my computer/get a new device for gaming purposes. Probably gonna be the former. I'm gonna look into virtual machines for my shitty Macbook (which isn't *that* shitty tbh, but you can't really do much with that OS). If I can't get the hang of Linux, I'm gonna go with Windows 10. If I do get the hang of Linux, though, I'm gonna install it on my crappy Windows 7 clunker and use it for that (because Steam apparently wants to kill Windows 7 support). I strongly considered getting a SteamDeck, but I realized that even the cheapest model would probably not fit into my credit limit, so I'm probably gonna put that off until the credit card company ups my limit. Either that, or I'm gonna go the slow way and see if I can buy it via Steam gift certificate money that I save throughout the whole year. Whatever. Either way, I'm determined to get back into actual gaming soon.

- See if there's any classes/courses pertaining to my interests that I can attend in person (or at least, online in a group setting). I NEED to have actual social interaction outside of work, home, or the Internet. Mom recommended me going to group classes for something, so I'm gonna see if that works for me. I do know that there's a jewellery/metalworking course that operates really close to one of the places I work, so if that's in my budget, I'm gonna go for that. If not, I guess I'm gonna have to do more research.

- Get more comfortable with displaying my interests around the house. For a long time, I've largely confined my expression to the Internet/private spaces in my house. Probably as some sort of low-level anxiety/fear of getting negatively judged for what I'm into. But I saw an article from Devon Price (this one) that said getting used to this low-level discomfort is a good thing, and can lead to other opportunities to do things that are (relatively) harmless yet come with the fear of being judged/censured/etc. So I'm gonna follow that advice and see where it leads me, and I figured a good place to start would be displaying my interests more often, even if I feel uncomfortable doing so.

SHIT I'M (hopefully) GONNA KEEP DOING:

- Creating, creating, creating! I've put out a LOT more fics in 2023, and hopefully I can keep that trend going. I've signed up for fic exchanges and other events, so that'll be a good motivator for keeping my creative juices flowing.

- Working out! After a long-ish period of not keeping up my workout schedule in 2023, I did start getting back into it in December. So I'm gonna continue and see how long I can keep it up. And maybe even expand it a bit, because I've got some parts of my body that I feel like I could improve with a little extra exercise. So seeing change in that respect will be a good motivator to keep going.

- Tattoo plans! I've got the design, the artist, AND the timeframe figured out. Now all I have to do is actually book the appointment. Hopefully I can have it in by late winter/early spring.

Also I changed up my Dreamwidth theme and added a few more icons (including the one that graces this entry). So yeah, that's fun~
