Everybody does these. I have done them ever since being on Dreamwidth in 2022. I'm doing one again. Here goes.
So remember how last year I said it was gonna be a sci-fi dystopia as year? Yeah, the political landscape certainly reflects that, at least on the burning land mass directly south of me. And it's probably doing the same thing up here on a more subtle level. But in terms of my own personal life, I think this year was better than 2024. I've gotten a lot better at asserting myself, taking initiative on tasks that need to be done at home and in my personal sphere, and getting out into the world and touching some grass.
Gaming-wise, I FINALLY got the SteamDeck i told myself I'd get all the way back in 2023. I also managed to tweak around a bit and get the Patreon-exclusive PC port to PolarDread running on it. Only got to Night 2 because I need to recalibrate the sensitivity of the control stick because it is fiddly as FUCK and interfering with my ability to fend off the bad guys. But I'd say it's pretty decent for someone with only a basic level of computer literacy (as far as latter millenial/early zoomer computer literacy goes. I ain't one of those kids who don't know what a folder or file extension is because they've been too dependent on mobile infrastructure.) But before that, I managed to beat Hotel Dusk: Room 215 (on original DS hardware because I found a used copy in my local secondhand media store), as well as ZENO. As well as what's been released of Deltarune and Tri City Monsters. Also started Cold Front, but I think I'm gonna DNF it because the save system is borked in the Mac port. Unless I pick it up on deck later...
Fanfic-wise, I was a little bit quieter with my posting compared to last year. However, this was for a relatively good reason: I started branching out with the kind of stuff I put out! Back in the spring, I put out Rift of the Neighbor-Posting, a social media AU outsider-POV piece for Rift of the Necrodancer that required me to do a little more under-the-hood stuff so I could emulate sites that didn't have the best fake post generators. First time doing something that resulted in 0 words on AO3, even though it did have words. They were just in the images, and AO3 didn't pick up on it because they don't could alt text as words.
Next, I managed to break my all-time word count record with the almost-17K word Still, My [[Bait]] Draws You Near. The PolarDread hyperfix was going damn strong throughout 2025, even though there were times I thought it was gonna get displaced by Deltarune. So I decided to remedy that by mashing those two canons together, and lo and behold I outdid myself. Wasn't expecting to even break 10K at first, but I pressed on and stuck with it to the end. Even today I still feel proud of myself for being able to stick with it, especially considering I've been too afraid to put out long shit for a while because I didn't think my interest would be able to last that long.
And last but not least, I was at waaaaaay more IRL events. Went to 3 concerts and 3 drag shows, so... 6 IRL events. One every two months or so. Which isn't as busy as I thought it was before writing this out, but still pretty decent. Probably a good ratio to keep in order to not take a grievous toll on my wallet or physical health. Also got that tattoo I said I'd get last year. Pain-wise, it varied between "bitch what is this I can barely feel anything this is nothing" to "OH my god i am actively getting knives driven through my skin", but mostly stuck as "sore yet bearable" level. Glad I finally got it.
So in terms of stuff I wanna do, it's mostly the same thing as last year's list. However, there are some new additions:
Mod my DSi and do shit with it. Picking up Hotel Dusk this past summer made me realize I missed out on a lot of DS classics (even though I grew up on the DS. Blame my mom for being allergic to anything that wasn't absolutely squeaky clean). So I figure I might as well mod it so it can run ROMs off an SD card instead of having to invest in one of those make-your-own multicart thingies that I don't know if they even exist for affordable prices anymore. Will also get me used to doing more under-the-hood computer stuff, especially considering I have a SteamDeck now and might have to do more with it in order to Game Properly. (and potentially prepare myself for making the switch to Linux in the future now that Windows is going to shit and MacOS is forever underpowered as fuck)
Watch/play/read/etc. stuff that's less niche. Mostly for the purposes of doing exchange/gift swap stuff because I know I have weird taste and don't keep up with the popular shit. I did watch the Chainsaw Man Reze film over last weekend with the fam and enjoyed it, so maybe I'll watch the series proper, especially since there's supposed to be a second season coming soon. Might also try to get into Pluribus and Murderbot, seeing as they've been floating around my Tumblr moot-sphere, and my live-action knowledge base is woefully lacking.
Actually establish and keep up a workout routine. I was doing decent for the first quarter of '25, but my routine got disrupted for a week when i was seeing my sis, and it unfortunately never recovered fully. But now that I have a better idea of not only how to overcome my exec function blocks in that area (keep weights somewhere where I don't have to go as far to get them, don't change clothes if that's too much of a barrier), but also what areas I want to work on (courtesy of tips from a servermate). So hopefully i can start doing that again. Especially now that I can feel my body threatening to Age(TM).
Write at least one 8K+ fic. Maybe another 10K+ one if possible. Now that I know I can squeeze out a decent amount of words without losing interest, I wanna do it again. Writing Big Fic was fun, so I can't wait to try another one.
Start doing exchanges/events again. I only did two big events last year, which took off a lot of pressure. But then again, pressure can be a good motivator sometimes. And i do wanna up my AO3 output this year, so that'll be a good excuse. As well as an excuse to get free shit.... I missed that.
